Project Ideas

The Upper Midwest Chapter of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) would like to encourage students to consider potential State Science & Engineering Fair projects in the field of acoustics. Projects in acoustics are judged by representatives of the Acoustical Society of America. Awards are presented on the basis of scientific approach, understanding of acoustical principles and presentation.

The field of acoustics is encountered in a wide variety of fields and applications. The following list technical committees of the ASA will hopefully provide some insights and ideas on possible projects. Examples of topics are listed under each technical committee.

ACOUSTICAL OCEANOGRAPHY (AO)

Underwater seismic sensing

Acoustical signatures of storms and tsunamis

ANIMAL BIOACOUSTICS (AB)

Effects of noise on wildlife

Animal communication

ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICS (AA)

Acoustics of music rehearsal facilities
Impact and footfall noise in multifamily dwellings

Classroom Acoustics

BIOMEDICAL ULTRASOUND/BIORESPONSE TO VIBRATION (BB)

Biological response of tissue to acoustics and vibration

Ultrasound techniques in medicine

ENGINEERING ACOUSTICS (EA)

Infrasound sensing of tsunamis

Acoustical radiation of vibrating surfaces

MUSICAL ACOUSTICS (MU)

Musical pitch and sound source separation

Physics of musical instruments

NOISE (NS)

Lawn, yard, and portable equipment noise in the U.S.

Measurement of noise and noise effect on animals and humans

Rain noise on buildings and structures

Noise produced by headphones or ear buds

PHYSICAL ACOUSTICS (PA)

Acoustic applications for hurricane and storm preparedness, and response
Use of acoustics to track storms

SIGNAL PROCESSING IN ACOUSTICS (SP)

Signal processing for communication
