150 Minnesota Students to Compete at Statewide High School Science Bowl

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

St. Paul, MN [January 13, 2025] – On Saturday, January 25, approximately 150 students representing 15 high schools will gather at Hamline University to compete in the 2025 Minnesota Science Bowl. This statewide competition is organized annually by the Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS). The winning team will advance to the prestigious National Science Bowl in Washington D.C., sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Science Bowl provides students who enjoy math and science a unique opportunity to deepen their knowledge and advance their teamwork skills. During Science Bowls, teams of four students compete head-to-head in fast-paced rounds to answer advanced science and math questions and solve technical problems. Top teams in the round-robin competition then compete in a double-elimination tournament to determine the state champion team.

“It is thrilling every year to see students–some new, some with Science Bowl history–demonstrate impressive scientific knowledge and also effective collaboration with their team, all at high speed!” says Science Bowl tournament manager Kristine Fowler. “Our fantastic community of Science Bowl volunteers and coaches are also great collaborators in enabling MAS to put on this exciting event  for these dedicated students!”

Founded in 1873, the MAS is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for Minnesotans of all backgrounds to engage in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning, inquiry, research, and networking. MAS sponsors STEM education programs and events for students in elementary school through college.

MAS coordinates the annual, statewide Science Bowl with the help of more than 70 volunteers and with generous support from sponsoring organizations including the Minnesota Alliance for Volunteer Advancement / Americorps Volunteer Generation Fund, Minnesota Department of Education, Ecolab, St. Paul & Minnesota Foundation, Hardenbergh Foundation, and H.B. Fuller.

The high schools planning to participate in the 2025 Science Bowl are: Academy of Holy Angels, Breck School, Burnsville High School, Chanhassen Senior High, Chaska High School, Columbia Heights Senior High, Edina High School, Harding High School, International School of Minnesota, Maple Grove Senior High, Minnetonka Senior High, Mounds View Senior High, Rosemount High School, The Blake School, and Wayzata High School.
