Undergraduates Present Research at Regional Symposium

St. Paul, MN [April 14, 2025] - Ninety undergraduate students will present their original research on April 26 at North Hennepin Community College 45th annual Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium. The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research symposium is organized by the Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS) and supported by regional colleges.

Students representing 22 regional public and private colleges and universities will showcase their research in oral and poster sessions and receive feedback from Minnesota STEM professionals. Students will also attend panels focused on graduate school and STEM careers. Dr. Noelle Noyes of the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, will deliver the keynote address. 

“Students are conducting an amazing variety of STEM research, working with their advisors at colleges and universities throughout this region. The Winchell Symposium gives them  the opportunity to present their research,  which is an essential component of their experience,” said program coordinator Kristine Fowler. “And they always relish the chance to connect with like-minded peers and learn about others’ research, whether it’s related to their own or very different.”

Institutions with participating students include: Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Bemidji State University, Bethel University, Concordia College - Moorhead, Concordia University - St. Paul, Crown College, Gustavus Adolphus College, Hamline University, Luther College, Macalester College, North Hennepin Community College, Northwestern College, Rochester Community & Technical College, St. Ambrose University, St. Catherine University, St. Mary's University of Minnesota, St. Olaf College, University of Minnesota - Duluth, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, University of St. Thomas, Waldorf University, and Wartburg College.

Founded in 1873, MAS is a statewide 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for Minnesotans of all backgrounds to engage in STEM learning, inquiry, research, and networking. MAS sponsors STEM education programs and events for students in preschool through college. 

The 2025 Winchell Symposium is hosted by North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park. The event is made possible through the support of the Michael H. Baker Foundation, the American Chemical Society’s Minnesota Section, Tri Beta National Biology Honor Society, and sponsoring colleges and departments at eight Minnesota colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota. Additional support comes from Minnesota Academy of Science sponsors, including the Alliance for Volunteer Advancement / Americorps Volunteer Generation Fund, the Minnesota Department of Education, and other generous sponsors and donors.
