24 Middle Schools Teams to Compete at Minnesota Regional Science Bowl for Middle School Students

St. Paul, MN – 120 middle school science and math students from across the state of Minnesota will compete on Saturday, February 9th in the Minnesota Academy of Science’s Minnesota Regional Science Bowl for Middle School Students.  As a regional tournament of the U.S, Department of Energy (DOE), the winning team will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the DOE National Science Bowl.

Students compete in five-person teams solving technical problems and answering questions in all branches of science and math. The tournament is conducted in a fast-paced question and answer format.  Teams go head-to-head and ring in to answer questions, just like the TV show Jeopardy. Each team plays multiple games in a round robin tournament with the chance to advance to a double-elimination championship.

The Science Bowl offers students who excel in math and science an opportunity to participate on a team and build leadership skills in an exciting, competitive format.  Students gain knowledge and stretch their science and math understanding by preparing for questions on a broad range of scientific disciplines.  The Science Bowl also gives the students a national competition to validate their interest in science and math and is designed to encourage them to pursue an education and career in science.

Last year’s winning team from Minnetonka West Middle School represented Minnesota and competed at the DOE National Science Bowl.

“Minnesota students have traditionally done well in the National Science Bowl, said Celia Waldock, Executive Director of the Minnesota Academy of Science. "We have a strong commitment to science education in our schools and from the business community.  We are proud to provide an exciting competitive event highlighting the achievements of the students in our state.”

The Minnesota Academy of Science supports Minnesota scientists at every stage of their development, providing a vital forum for scientific inquiry and discussion that reaches thousands of Minnesotans annually.  The event is sponsored by generous contributions from , Ecolab FoundationVerizon Wireless, University of St. Thomas-School of Engineering  Hardenbergh Foundation, General MillsSeagate, Medtronic, Cray Inc., General Dynamics, Diasorin, and the United States Department of Energy
