MINNESOTA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE
ST. PAUL, MN (April 20, 2019) - Eighty students will gather this Saturday (April 23) on the University of Northwestern campus to compete in the North Central Regional Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS), a scientific research paper competition for high school students in Minnesota and the Dakotas.
Student competitors advanced to this state-level competition after evaluation by regional research paper review teams across Minnesota. They now compete for scholarships and the chance for national recognition.
This year, students present their original research findings on topics including 3-D printing, zebra mussels, and cancer treatments. "I was amazed to see so many projects in environmental and life sciences this year," said Sara Gomez, JSHS Program Director. "I would also like to congratulate the students who are returning to JSHS again this year."
North Central JSHS is one of 48 regional symposia serving more than 10,000 students annually in the U.S. Students attending JSHS present their original research and compete for $4,500 in scholarships and other awards.
Top students win an all-expense-paid trip to participate in the National JSHS competition hosted by the National Science Teachers Association and sponsored by the Army Educational Outreach Program and the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. At the national level, students compete for significant scholarship awards.
The Minnesota Academy of Science will announce the Regional Finalists at www.mnmas.org on Monday, March 26. Winning students may receive their awards at the Special Awards Ceremony held March 31 at 7:00 p.m. at the Minnesota State Science & Engineering Fair (Earle Brown Heritage Center, Brooklyn Center, MN).
National JSHS will be held April 24-28, 2019, in Albuquerque, NM.
North Central JSHS is an Access to Excellence program of the Minnesota Academy of Science sponsored by Seagate Technology, 3M, Ecolab, General Mills, and the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP).
