FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[St. Paul, MN, April 4, 2022] - Seventy-one students from 22 schools showcased their original research in the North Central Regional Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS). JSHS is an annual science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research paper competition for high school students in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Students advancing to the National JSHS competition are:

FIRST PLACE ($2,000): Christine Song (Mayo High School), Cure of Breast Cancer - Year 5: A Novel Approach to Treating Hormonal Breast Cancer using Diabetes Medication through Clinical Database and 3D ex vivo Model

SECOND PLACE ($1,500): Quinn Hughes and Tyler Clair (Minnetonka High School), Using Monte Carlo Simulation to Optimize Vitamin C Production in Brassica oleracea using Abiotic Plant Stress

The competition was hosted virtually by the Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS) from March 20-31. JSHS students studied hot water efficiency, developed prosthetics, tested oat flours, and sought solutions to issues such as the effects of climate change on wildfire occurrence. “This year’s JSHS participants demonstrated exceptional creativity and passion for scientific research,” said JSHS Program Manager Peter Park. “We are proud of their accomplishments and excited to see what they achieve in the future.” For a full list of award winners, please visit mnmas.org/2022-jshs-awards

North Central JSHS is one of dozens of regional symposia annually serving more than 10,000 students in the United States. Students advanced to this regional-level competition after evaluation by research paper review teams across Minnesota and the Dakotas. North Central JSHS is sponsored by the National Science Teaching Association on behalf of the Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The 2022 National JSHS will run April 20-23 as an in-person competition in Albuquerque, New Mexico, bringing together more than 200 high school students who qualify by submitting and presenting original scientific research papers in regional symposia. At the national level, students compete for significant scholarship awards.

Founded in 1873, MAS is a statewide 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to connecting Minnesotans of all backgrounds with resources and opportunities to engage in STEM learning, research, and communication - and to recognize excellence in these areas. MAS’ programs include team competitions, individual research paper and project showcases, and mentoring and enrichment programs that promote STEM inquiry and research.
