[ST. PAUL, MN, March 24, 2022] - On March 31, participants from the 85th annual Minnesota State Science & Engineering Fair (MSSEF) will gather at the Science Museum of Minnesota to celebrate their achievements in scientific research. Students in grades 6-12 will network with their peers, explore museum exhibits, view IMAX films, and more in this event designed to recognize their research accomplishments. MSSEF is a program of the Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS).
“We’re so excited to partner with the Science Museum of Minnesota to provide a forum for recognizing and celebrating excellence in scientific research among Minnesota’s students,” said MAS Director of Community Outreach Sara Gomez. “This event will bring together students from across the state who are passionate about science and encourage them to keep using scientific research to make a difference in their communities.”
This year’s project judging and presentations occurred virtually, where hundreds of judges from companies and organizations across the state provided feedback on projects and determined award winners. Dozens of companies and organizations, including Seagate, Ecolab, 3M, and the Broadcom Foundation give awards valued at more than $15,000. A top prize is the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair Award, which recognizes up to five of the most outstanding high school projects. MAS will announce the top winners during a live virtual awards ceremony on March 30, and all award results will be posted at mnmas.org after the awards ceremony.
The theme of this year’s event is Always curious. Always learning. Always growing. MSSEF projects encompass a wide breadth of scientific inquiry, from measuring nutrition in popular snacks to investigating the relationship between lung capacity and age. The Science Museum of Minnesota partnered with MAS to host this year’s in-person event. Seagate Technology is the MSSEF’s premier sponsor. Additional support comes from the Minnesota Department of Education, Ecolab, Broadcom Foundation, General Mills, and the Hardenbergh Foundation.
