Undergraduates Present Research at Regional Symposium

St. Paul, MN [April 18, 2023] - Over 50 undergraduate students will present their original research on April 29 at Saint John’s University during the 43rd Annual Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium. The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) symposium is organized by the Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS) and supported by regional colleges.

Students representing 14 regional public and private colleges will present their original research in oral and poster sessions and receive feedback from Minnesota STEM professionals. Students will also attend panels focused on graduate school and STEM careers. Dr. Lisa Jungbauer Nikolas from Medtronic will deliver the keynote address, Medical Device Innovations: Who, Where & What do they ‘S.T.E.M.’ from?

“By participating in the symposium, undergraduates gain valuable experience communicating research findings with their peers, which is an essential component of success in STEM fields,” said program coordinator Kristine Fowler. “We know the Winchell Symposium makes all participants feel more connected to the Minnesota STEM community, which is another big benefit.”

Institutions with participating students include: Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Bethel University, College of St. Benedict & St. John's University, Concordia University - St. Paul, Crown College, Hamline University, Macalester College, Minneapolis College, Saint Paul College, Saint Louis University, St. Olaf College, University of Minnesota - Morris, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and the University of St. Thomas.

Founded in 1873, MAS is a statewide 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for Minnesotans of all backgrounds to engage in STEM learning, inquiry, research, and networking. MAS sponsors STEM education programs and events for students in preschool through college. 

The 2023 Winchell Symposium is hosted by the College of Saint Benedict & Saint John’s University and made possible through the support of the American Chemical Society’s Minnesota Section, sponsoring colleges and departments at eight Minnesota colleges and universities including the University of Minnesota, and Minnesota Academy of Science program sponsors including the Minnesota Department of Education, the Minnesota Alliance for Volunteer Advancement/Americorps Volunteer Generation Fund, Ecolab, the Hardenbergh Foundation, 3M, and General Dynamics Mission Systems.
